- WARRIORS J.B. CARROLL HOSTS COMPUTER BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS
- AT UPCOMING APPLEFEST
-
-
- Attention all you basketball bystanders! Here's your opportunity to get off
- the bench and into the game, complete with slam dunks, three-point shots and
- behind the back passes. On Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19,
- Activision will host the "Gamestar GBA Championship Basketball Challenge," a
- computer basketball tournament open to all attendees of the upcoming AppleFest
- Conference and Exhibition, to be held at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium.
- Then, on Sunday, September 20, Golden State Warriors star J.B. Carroll will
- host the tournament play-offs, where finalists will compete for an Apple IIGS
- computer and library of Activision software. And, local journalists and
- broadcast celebrities take heed! Dust off your joysticks and enter the
- "Basketball Battle of the Best Press." J.B. challenges you to beat him at GBA
- Championship Basketball, or compete against fellow reporters, beginning at
- 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
-
- The "Gamestar GBA Championship Basketball Challenge" is being hosted to
- showcase Gamestar's Championship Basketball: Two-on-Two, a basketball
- simulation software program which is new for the Apple IIGS. The challenge
- will run from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., both Friday and Saturday.
- Contestants will attempt to score as many points as possible in one quarter of
- play against the computer. The Sunday championship will pit the individual
- with the highest score on Friday against the person who scores the highest on
- Saturday. Sunday's tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Activision
- booth (#506) and run about 45 minutes. Carroll will Emcee the tournament, act
- as sportscaster to call the plays, and reward the Apple IIGS and software to
- the tournament champion.
-
- In return for Carroll's participation, Activision will make a donation to the
- Broad View Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Carroll in 1985
- with his own funds. The Broad View Foundation endeavors to financially assist
- students desiring to attend college; improve academic, social and intellectual
- skills; and provide alternative receation and social outlets through camps and
- seminars. The project operates on feelings that participation in Foundation
- activities encourages a positive overall development in participants.
- Conceptually, the Broad View Foundation serves as a vehicle for broadening the
- narrow view of some inner-city youth. Carroll is the Foundation's director
- and sole benefactor.
-
- Journalists and broadcast celebrities will have an opportunity to contribute
- to the Broad View Foundation through their participation in "The Basketball
- Battle of the Best Press," which will be held on Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00
- p.m. in the Activision booth. These contestants will attempt to score as many
- points as possible in one quarter of play against Carroll, or a rival
- journalist. Activision will provide an additional contribution to the
- Foundation in a dollar amount that is five times the score of the highest
- scoring journalist.
-
- "To play GBA Championship Basketball you must understand offensive and
- defensive strategy, how to steal, rebound and most of all, the proper timing
- of a shot," noted Scott Orr, vice president of sports simulation software at
- Activision. "I predict that the competition will be fierce!"
